Berthold Australia was established in 1992, as a distributor of scientific instruments for the measurement and imaging of radiation in various forms – ionizing, fluorescence, luminescence and visible light. Early focus was on Life Sciences and Biotechnology applications, but was later expanded to Materials Sciences, Engineering and Industrial applications.

In the mid 1990’s, Berthold became heavily involved in supporting medical cyclotron facilities, through provision of radiochemistry equipment, radiation safety monitoring and accelerator engineering. This eventually led to the formation in year 2000 of Berthold’s sister company Cyclotek, the first commercial operator of medical cyclotrons in Australia, and now a major supplier of radiopharmaceutical for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging in Australia and New Zealand.

In 2004, Berthold Australia was the lead organisation in the successful bid to establish the Cooperative Research Centre for Biomedical Imaging Development Ltd (CRCBID). CRCBID aims to develop and commercialise new radiotracers and detectors for clinical use to pinpoint disease to ultimately improve treatment and patient care. The CRC is founded on a collaborative arrangement between research and industry participants established and supported under the Australian Governments Cooperative Research Centres Programme.  The participants include the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, The Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Monash University, Cyclotek, GE Healthcare and Berthold.

In addition to the CRC, Berthold Australia is also involved in a number of other research projects, some of which are funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and similar organizations.
