The illicit trafficking of radionuclides has been a major issue even before September 2001. For instance in Germany there were several cases of illegal plutonium reported during recent years. The last spectacular case was in Karlsruhe, where Plutonium was stolen.
BERTHOLD TECHNOLOGES GmbH has designed an extremly sensitive plutonium monitor based on fission neutron detection. This technique is very effective, because the neutrons are only weakly shielded.
However there are also products to search and identify gamma emitters. With the help of gamma spectroscopy radionuclides can be identified. Berthold GmbH now has a hand-held gamma spectrometer LB125 based on a NaI scintillation detector. This instruments is easy to use, especially for applications in customs, police and military organisations.
